2010 Falcons Progressing Very Nicely, Thank You Very Much
Written by Bernie Linn

SOUTH LEBANON -  Entering the second week of practice, Cedar Crest second-year head football coach Tom Waranavage seemed pleased with the progress of the 2010 edition.

“I like where we are right now," he said. " Kids are very coachable. Our kids have worked real hard and had a pretty good scrimmage (against Conestoga Valley) Saturday."

"We will be competitive in our games, Waranavage continued, "but young in some spots. We must be able to win the close games.”

Returning starters include Cal Tice (center and inside linebacker), Dante Gonzalez (running back and outside linebacker), Darin Klein, and Lucardy Jean-Francois (receiver and defensive back).

“Garrett Levengood will be the starting quarterback and Nick Castarino will also get some playing time,” coach Waranavage revealed.

No major changes are expected in the Falcon running game expected this season.

“Dante will go to tailback this year," said Waranavage. " Two very good tailbacks return from last year. They are 5’6” and 5’8” but are quick,. Probably not see the big touchdown runs like last year. More of the 10 to 15 yard gainers.”

Billy Richards and Dalton Ritter will be the wide receivers. Last year, Ritter kicked for the Falcons on Friday nights and also played soccer, but he will be a full-time member of the football squad this season and will handle field goal duties this fall.

Cedar Crest will go with a 4-4-3 defensive alignment with Darwin Klein and Benny Coleman anchoring the defensive end positions, while Patrick Oest will rotate at both ends.

“We will play a whole host of kids in the interior line-Chris Bishop, Jacoby Ortiz, Colby Drahovsky and Austin Sullivan,” said Waranavage.

The inside linebackers will be Kyle Tice, Nick Bechtold and Brian Wawrzyniak, and the outside linebacker duties will be handled by McFarland, Gonzalez, Ryan Smith, and Kyle Robbins.  At the safety position will be Castorino, Levengood  and Ryan O’Donnell.

With the backyard rivalry with Lebanon looming at the end of next week, coach Waranavage subtly concluded, “on Week One we will line up and play. Don’t make it more than what it is. We have nine more after that.”

At Woods Creek, Diners Can Take a Walk on the Wild Side
Written by Jeff Falk

Most hunters and fishermen enjoy the flavor and taste of the prepared game that they have harvested. That concept was the launching pad for Lebanon County's most unique restaurant.

And what has made Woods Creek Grill the locale's fastest growing eatery is the simple fact that it is so different.

Woods Creek, located on Route 72 north of Lickdale, specializes in the preparation of wild-game delights like venison, bison, boar and rattle snake. Although all the entrees are farm-raised and USDA-approved, it is a fare not offered anywhere else in the area.

"We're attracting a lot of everybody," said Greg Kaiser, Jr., Woods Creek's general manager. "We do attract the outdoorsmen type. All the local people are looking for some place different to go. And almost everyone around here hunts and fishes.

"Things are going great," Kaiser continued. "Every week we get a little better. For where we are now, we're happy with the progress."

The Woods Creek concept was the collaboration of partners Kaiser, his dad, Greg Kaiser, Sr., and Dave DeWeese. All are avid outdoorsmen.

The establishment's patronage has experienced a steady growth since its opening on May 1.

"It was more Dave's idea than anyone else's," said Kaiser. "But we're all hunters and fishermen. And we're game eaters. But a lot of people haven't had it prepared right."

Woods Creek also offers alligator, elk, quail, trout and duck, all prepared minus that 'gamey' flavor. For the more civilized palates there's cow steaks, pig ribs and chicken breasts.

"Where can you get food like this around here?," said Kaiser. "I don't know. We're one of a kind for this area, which is kind of our thing. We wanted to be unique and different.
